Catholics take their beliefs seriously. And receiving the Eucharist (communion) is something that is only available to Catholics in good standing.
Do you know what will make you fall out of your “good standing” status? Believing that it’s okay to murder unborn babies – and being so vocal about it that you get an entire country to go along with your evil plan.
In case it wasn’t clear, we’re talking about abortion. The Speaker of the House claims that she’s a Catholic, but she’s also got a progressive agenda that would allow women to abort their unborn children even after a heartbeat is heard. When pressed, most progressives are fine with abortion all the way until the child is being pushed into the world – and that’s just cold-blooded murder when the fetus is viable in the outside world.
A Roman Catholic Bishop has barred Pelosi from receiving the Eucharist. Archbishop Salvatore Cordileone of San Francisco actually wrote her a letter to inform her that he would be preventing her from obtaining Communion due to her continued advocacy on the abortion issue while constantly referring to her Catholic faith in public.
Cordileone told the Speaker that she won’t be given access to Communion “until such time as you publicly repudiate your advocacy for the legitimacy of abortion and confess and receive absolution of this grave sin in the sacrament of Penance.”
It’s about time someone does something about Pelosi. She cannot continue to support abortion as openly as she does while still promising that she’s a God-fearing Catholic.
Of course, we don’t know if Biden is still able to get Communion. He, too, is Catholic while also being in support of abortions.
Cordileone is the archbishop in the same part of California where Pelosi’s district is, so he’s focusing on the politician he can control.
Pope Francis, however, is a little concerned that bishops have taken things a bit too far. He has told bishops that they should “tread softly” on the topic of denying people the Eucharist. This included advising the US Conference of Catholic Bishops against a policy that would have denied Communion to President Biden.
Pope Francis, when asked in 2021, said that he has never refused the Eucharist to anyone. “What should a shepherd do? Be a shepherd and not going around condemning or not condemning. They must be a shepherd with God’s style. And God’s style is closeness, compassion and tenderness.”
Ahh, but where is the compassion and tenderness from Pelosi? There is none. So, perhaps Pole Francis should be having this discussion with the Speaker of the House instead of with his bishops.
In the open letter that Cordileone wrote to Pelosi this past week, he stressed that his move was not political. Instead, he believes that he is acting in a purely pastoral manner. He writes, “Speaker Pelosi remains our sister in Christ. Her advocacy for the case of the poor and vulnerable elicits my admiration.”
Pelosi must decide what she is going to do. When the draft of the Supreme Court decision was leaked, which would overturn Roe v. Wade, she moved to codify abortion rights into federal law – though the Senate failed to confirm after the House passed the bill. She has openly and strongly defended abortion rights even though the Catholic Church has a firm stance on abortion.
We have yet to hear what Pelosi thinks about being banned from receiving Communion.
