Nellis Air Force Base is one of the most requested and simultaneously despised bases in the US Air Force. While its location just NE of downtown Las Vegas makes it a great place for friends and family to visit, the strip, bums, and angry locals get old quickly. As such they hold a lot of activities on base for those serving and their families.
Now, despite assurances from Secretary of Defense Lloyd Austin that the Department of Defense (DoD) is not supporting or funding on-base drag shows, the base is hosting a free all-ages show. As announced via a FB post that was shared with the Daily Caller says “The Nellis LGBTQ+ Pride Council is proud to bring the community the third annual FREE COMMUNITY DRAG SHOWCASE for Pride!”
Sponsored by the Nellis LGBTQ+ Pride Council, the shows claim to be a performance steeped in the memory of the Stonewall riots by members of the LGBTQ community due to police raids of their Stonewall Inn. Located in Lower Manhattan, the Greenwich Village had been a gay Mecca in NYC for years, and now these drag queens want to bring it to those serving.
When Austin has been pressed about the DoD’s level of involvement in these events, he has simply ascertained his previous claims that the DoD was not supporting or funding drag queens in any way. Yet the Navy has enlisted a drag queen named “Harpy Daniels” in a recruitment effort within the last few months. Considering he is presently serving in the Navy, they were paying for his services as a drag queen.
Entertainment for the troops should be about what they will find entertaining. It’s about making sure that they are representing those in their ranks and what interests them. The Air Force base has not only the right but the duty to only accept proper entertainment on their bases. Needless to say, this isn’t it. The Nellis LGTBQ+ Pride Council can take their show someplace else. I hear it’s really nice about six miles off the strip this time of year.
