The Department of Housing and Urban Development has launched a sweeping review to root out illegal aliens living in federally funded housing. HUD Secretary Scott Turner announced that every Public Housing Authority has just 30 days to provide a “full and comprehensive accounting” of tenants in Section 8 housing and other HUD programs, along with proof of U.S. citizenship or eligible immigration status.

“Within 30 days of receipt of this notice, HUD is requesting that every Public Housing Authority (PHA) provide a full and comprehensive accounting of all tenants who are receiving a Section 8 voucher and/or residing in HUD-funded housing,” Turner stated. “HUD is requiring the name, mailing address, number of bedrooms, the cost of the unit, and proof of American citizenship or eligible immigration status as defined by the law.”

Turner made clear that the days of illegals gaming the system are over. “No longer will illegal aliens be able to leave citizenship boxes blank or take advantage of HUD-funded housing, riding the coattails of hardworking American citizens,” he said.

The move comes as millions of American citizens—including low-income families, veterans, the elderly, and the disabled—struggle to secure housing assistance. Turner noted that HUD currently serves only one in four eligible families, in part because resources have been misused due to weak enforcement against illegal aliens.

“American citizens will be prioritized when it comes to living in HUD-funded government-funded housing,” Turner affirmed. He explained that over 3,000 housing authorities nationwide have been notified of the new requirements, with Washington, D.C. among the first. “We just sent out a letter to the D.C. Housing Authority, and it has been received by them,” he said, noting that they have “30 days” to report all residents receiving Section 8 vouchers or HUD funding.

Turner warned that HUD will use “all available enforcement actions” against entities that fail to comply, including reviewing their federal funding and program eligibility. In April, he had already made it clear that “no taxpayer dollars will be given to organizations that support, house, shelter, or provide care to illegal aliens who broke the law.”

The Section 8 Housing Choice Voucher Program was designed to help low-income Americans access safe housing in the private market, with subsidies paid directly to landlords. By allowing illegal aliens to exploit the system, Democrats undermined the very purpose of the program and reduced access for citizens in need.

Now, under Trump’s leadership, HUD is restoring accountability and fairness. For decades, families in cities across the country have faced years-long waiting lists for affordable housing, even as illegals slipped through the cracks. With this crackdown, those days are coming to an end.

This policy underscores a core principle of the America First agenda: taxpayer-funded programs exist to serve citizens, not lawbreakers. It also exposes the contrast between Trump’s decisive leadership and Democrat policies that have prioritized migrants over Americans.

HUD’s action sends a strong message: the federal government will not subsidize illegal immigration. Housing assistance must go to those who have earned it—the American people. This is how law and order is restored, resources are protected, and struggling families finally get the help they deserve.

President Trump promised to put America first, and once again he is delivering.
