Left-wing activist Calla Walsh made international headlines this week after footage surfaced of her shouting “Death to America” and “Death to Israel” during a state-sponsored rally in Iran. But the radical’s fiery rhetoric didn’t end in Tehran. Upon returning to the United States, Walsh claimed she was detained by Customs and Border Protection agents for several hours at JFK Airport in New York, saying she was met by what she called a “Gestapo agent.”

The 21-year-old co-founder of the extremist pro-Hamas group Unity of Fields took to social media Wednesday to claim her encounter with federal agents was expected and politically motivated. “I got detained/questioned by CBP for a few hours, nothing that I didn’t expect,” she wrote. “I had no phone for them to seize.”

Walsh had been in Iran attending a media event reportedly organized by the U.S.-sanctioned state broadcaster. Video showed her clad in government-mandated headwear, praising “the Axis of Resistance”—a term used by Iran and its terror proxies like Hamas and Hezbollah—and saluting “martyrs” and “victory.” The crowd applauded.

Now back on American soil, Walsh is playing the victim, claiming she’s being unfairly targeted for her “anti-imperialist political activity.” But critics say that’s a stunning misdirection from someone who publicly aligned herself with Iran’s theocratic regime and its terror affiliates.

The Department of Homeland Security offered a more measured explanation, stating that “all individuals, including U.S. Citizens, are subject to inspection by U.S. Customs and Border Protection upon entry into the United States to ensure compliance with all applicable laws and regulations.”

That’s hardly surprising, given Walsh’s track record. Her organization, Unity of Fields—previously known as Palestine Action U.S.—has openly promoted anti-Israel violence and was linked to a May 2024 vandalism attack on a defense contractor in New Hampshire. Walsh was reportedly involved and served a 60-day jail sentence.

She also claims to have been detained by border officials after a prior trip to “revolutionary Cuba,” saying the repeated scrutiny means she’s “on some sort of domestic terrorism watch list.”

In her mind, this is proof of government overreach. In the minds of many Americans, it’s a sensible response to someone who praises America’s enemies, breaks U.S. laws, and then demands immunity from the consequences.

The incident has reignited concerns about the blurry line between free speech and aiding hostile regimes. Unity of Fields’ activities have reportedly drawn the FBI’s attention, and critics are demanding closer scrutiny of activists who travel abroad to promote violent ideologies—especially when they return to the U.S. touting slogans from Iran’s propaganda playbook.

Calla Walsh may believe she’s a brave dissident. But to many, her actions look less like resistance and more like betrayal—on camera, in enemy territory, and now under the eyes of American law enforcement.
