Leftists Are Perfecting Censorship Tactics Abroad

In a sobering segment of The Alex Marlow Show, Breitbart’s International News Editor Frances Martel pulled back the curtain on why Americans should be paying very close attention to what’s unfolding in Brazil. According to Martel, the South American nation has become a “laboratory” for leftist lawfare, where judicial overreach and censorship aren’t just features of the system—they are the system.

“They are way ahead of us in the cycle that leads to total court dictatorship,” Martel warned, referring to how Brazil’s Supreme Federal Tribunal (STF) has amassed sweeping power that would be unthinkable in the U.S.—for now. But the tactics being honed there are starting to look eerily familiar. From censorship masquerading as moderation to judges acting as political enforcers, the trends point in a dangerous direction.

Martel’s warning comes at a critical time. Just this week, President Trump declared Brazil a national security threat and sanctioned STF Justice Alexandre de Moraes for using his position to persecute conservatives and silence dissent, including American tech companies. The charges aren’t just symbolic—they include visa bans, asset freezes, and a 50% tariff on Brazilian imports. It’s a bold move from a U.S. president who sees exactly where this is headed.

Alex Marlow, host of the show and author of the forthcoming book Breaking the Law: Exposing the Weaponization of America’s Legal System Against Donald Trump, draws a clear connection between Brazil’s trajectory and the recent legal attacks against Trump here at home. “They’re perfecting the playbook down there,” Marlow said. “The lawfare, the censorship, the intimidation—it’s all coming from the same ideological factory.”

Martel echoed that point, calling Brazil a “test-run” for soft tyranny. With its judiciary unchecked, Brazil’s leftist elites have been able to criminalize political opinions, censor online speech through court orders, and prosecute opposition figures under the guise of protecting “democracy.” Sound familiar? It should.

In the U.S., similar tactics are emerging: gag orders on political speech, politically-motivated prosecutions, intelligence agencies pressuring platforms to de-platform dissidents, and courts bending over backwards to shield the left from accountability. While the First Amendment still holds, the cultural and institutional momentum is pushing hard in the opposite direction.

What makes the Brazilian example so alarming is how normalized these abuses have become under the guise of fighting “fake news” and “protecting democracy.” These buzzwords are now being used globally to justify some of the most authoritarian crackdowns we’ve seen in decades. And the left is watching closely. If they can get away with it in Brazil, how long before similar “emergency measures” are attempted here?

Martel’s message is clear: don’t wait until it’s too late. Americans must understand that the battle against lawfare isn’t just about Donald Trump or a handful of high-profile court cases—it’s about whether we want to live in a country where unelected judges can override elections, silence dissent, and handpick the opposition. Because that’s exactly what’s taking root in Brazil—and it’s already starting to sprout here.
