Barack Obama is really something.
On Thursday, he praised the Israel-Hamas peace deal. But he failed to name the driving force behind it. That was Donald Trump.
There’s some style and grace for you.
Now Obama is weighing in on California’s controversial Prop. 50 initiative. The measure aims to subvert the state constitutional amendment. That amendment gave mapmaking power to the independent Citizens Redistricting Commission.
Prop. 50 would temporarily substitute maps drawn by the highly partisan legislature. The goal is to gerrymander the Golden State even further.
The former president is basically saying something remarkable. If you want to fix something, shatter it into pieces first. The only problem is that when you smash something, you can never put it back together perfectly.
Everyone knows that if this abomination passes, the word temporarily will quickly be forgotten. Democrats will hold on to their newfound power like Charlton Heston gripping his gun.
It’s astonishing how these progressive politicians can look you straight in the eye. They grin ebulliently and say we’re protecting you by hurting you.
Obama’s calm, seemingly rational explanations fall to pieces. You realize the absolute mental gymnastics required to believe what he’s saying.
“California, the whole nation is counting on you. Democracy is on the ballot November 4th. Republicans want to steal enough seats in Congress to rig the next election and wield unchecked power for two more years.”
“With Prop 50, you can stop Republicans in their tracks. Prop 50 puts our elections back on a level playing field. Preserves independent redistricting over the long term, and lets the people decide. Return your ballot today. Vote yes on 50.”
This makes the blood boil. You have a former president of the United States gaslighting you straight to your face. Prop 50 puts our elections back on a level playing field.
No, its very intent is to do the opposite. It takes power away from the people.
Preserves independent redistricting, he says piously. Then he quickly adds in the long term. The whole point of the measure is to take it away in the short term.
This is highly unlikely to be short if they win this battle. Obama knows that.
And lets the people decide, he concludes.
Except that Newsom’s insidious Prop. 50 is specifically designed to trick voters. It makes them vote on maps already drawn by politicians. Not by the people or the independent commission.
The effort has so far cost hundreds of millions of dollars. Gov. Gavin Newsom refuses to give firefighters a raise at the same time. He says there’s not enough money.
Any comment, Barack?
Politicians all have to shill for something at some point in their careers. They will most likely shade facts and interpretations to their benefit. But the absolute misleading of voters here is disgusting.
The blatant attempt to fool them is at a nauseating level. Even for Democrats.
We expect this from Newsom. We see his slithery machinations on a daily basis. But to see Obama stoop to this level is an ugly reminder. It shows how nauseating he always was.
Obama’s involvement in Prop. 50 proves Democrats will say anything to maintain power. They claim to protect democracy while actively undermining it. They accuse Republicans of rigging elections while attempting to do exactly that.
The Citizens Redistricting Commission was created to take redistricting power away from politicians. California voters approved this reform through a constitutional amendment. They wanted independent experts drawing district lines, not partisan legislators.
Now Democrats want to temporarily give that power back to the legislature. They claim this is necessary to protect democracy. But the real goal is gerrymandering districts to favor Democrats.
Obama’s ad is full of contradictions and lies. He says Republicans want to steal enough seats to rig elections. But Prop. 50 is the actual attempt to rig elections through gerrymandering.
He claims Prop. 50 puts elections back on a level playing field. But taking power from an independent commission and giving it to partisan legislators does the opposite.
He says it preserves independent redistricting over the long term. But first it destroys independent redistricting in the short term. Democrats hope voters won’t notice this sleight of hand.
The temporary language is meaningless. Once Democrats have the power to draw their own districts, they won’t give it back. They will find excuses to extend their control indefinitely.
Obama says Prop. 50 lets the people decide. But the people already decided when they created the independent commission. Prop. 50 overrides that decision and gives power to politicians.
The hundreds of millions spent on this campaign could fund raises for firefighters. California faces constant wildfire threats. Firefighters risk their lives protecting communities.
But Newsom claims there’s no money for raises. Meanwhile, he pours resources into a gerrymandering scheme. His priorities are clear.
Thirty California district attorneys oppose Prop. 50. These law enforcement leaders see through the deception. They recognize it as a power grab.
The measure would shred black and Hispanic representation. Current independent districts provide fair representation for minority communities. Politician-drawn districts would dilute their voting power.
